Fabio is also an adjunct professor at Fordham Law School, where he teaches a seminar on media law design. He began his legal career at Hughes Hubbard & Reed after graduating from Columbia Law School and the Columbia Graduate School of Journalism. This discussion will focus on the legal issues surrounding reporting on the #MeToo movement, with American and Italian perspectives on issues such as procurement, privacy, defamation, and reporting. Fabio Bertoni is General Counsel of The New Yorker magazine, where he is responsible for reviewing all articles, website posts, videos, and other content published by The New Yorker prior to publication, as well as overseeing legal matters surrounding the New York Film Festival and other events. Prior to joining The New Yorker, Fabio was Assistant General Counsel at HarperCollins Publishers, where he led the review of non-fiction essays before publication and handled legal issues for the Children`s Division, negotiated author-publishing agreements, and advised on licensing, copyright, and trademark matters. Prior to that, Fabio was Vice President and Deputy General Counsel at ALM Media, publisher of The American Lawyer, the New York Law Journal and dozens of other newspapers and magazines in the United States. During our conversation, we talked about his journey from journalist to lawyer working with journalists; the process, decision and value of a dual degree; the importance of the Law School`s clinics to its legal journey; overlapping legal and journalistic ways of thinking; his roles as an in-house media lawyer, including pre-publication review and review and other work related to potential defamation allegations; the future of journalism and law; the difference between a law firm and an in-house lawyer; the challenges of leaving and returning to the legal workforce after spending time at home with young children; and more.
