The case list provides volunteers with a variety of cases, including consumer law, employment, housing, health, immigration, transaction support for local nonprofits, and family law. Through pro bono representation, volunteer lawyers gain valuable legal experience as their client`s lead counsel from the beginning to the end of a case. This research can be done on a volunteer`s off-time and does not need to be done in-house at DFC. Impacts in recent years have included access to health care, the criminalization of homelessness and the development of affordable housing. PLC pays particular attention to the issue of affordable housing and is active in administrative advocacy and litigation to develop a more favourable climate for the development of affordable housing. The Public Law Center, Orange County`s pro bono law firm, is committed to providing access to justice for low-income residents. Through volunteers and staff, the Public Law Centre provides free civil law services, including counseling, individual advocacy, community building, strategic litigation, and advocacy to challenge societal injustices. Now in its 29th year, DFC works with nearly 1,000 volunteer lawyers, paralegals and law students from across the county who volunteer their time and expertise. DFC engages its volunteers in a variety of ways, including pro bono advocacy, staffing legal clinics, mentoring less experienced pro bono lawyers, and in-house volunteering.
Federally funded legal aid firms provide lawyers who are experts in helping low-income people with legal problems. Everyone should have access to a lawyer to help them solve legal problems. The California courts website also has online resources that can help you find help. – Volunteers with expertise in a particular area of law can serve as mentors to less experienced lawyers. In addition, PLC organizes MCLE trainings and community education presentations and is looking for volunteers as trainers. As mentors or trainers, volunteers have the opportunity to educate and network with other Orange County lawyers. We also provide free legal advice and representation to nonprofits and qualified small businesses in Orange County. Operation Veterans Re-Entry provides free legal assistance to Orange County veterans and their families to help them reintegrate into civilian life. PLC`s Community Organizations Legal Assistance Project (COLAP) provides free legal services to non-profit organizations, as well as daycares and providers. PLC will also help micro-entrepreneurs who meet certain eligibility criteria. DFC hosts more than 200 legal clinics each year in community locations in Orange County. Volunteers play a crucial role in admitting, assessing client needs, and providing brief advice and guidance when possible at these clinics. By participating in a legal clinic, volunteers gain experience in direct client contact, problem detection and client communication.
